Intent

 

We want our children to leave the Belfry CEVA Primary School understanding that the world is filled with different places and people, and able to use maps and compass points to talk about the physical and human features of countries, continents and oceans. They will be able to talk about the Equator, Pangaea, the four countries of the United Kingdom, weather and climate, physical and human geography, latitude, longitude and time zones.

 

Pupils will know how to make links between these areas of learning, and be able to apply these skills to any place that they look at, including the local community.  

 

Pupils will be taught to make links between these areas of learning, with the aim of developing engaged, motivated and curious learners that take an interest in the world around them.

 

Implementation

 

Our Geography curriculum has been designed to cover all of the skills, knowledge and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum states that ‘as pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

 

 To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build on, our Geography curriculum is designed to competently cover the four main strands: Locational Knowledge; Place knowledge; Human and Physical Geography; Geographical Skills and Fieldwork.

 

When covering each of these strands, the content will be carefully sequenced and class teachers will model explicitly the subject-specific vocabulary and skills relevant to the unit.

 

Impact

 

Geography assessment is ongoing throughout the topic, and summative assessment is completed at the end of each topic against the geography Learning Objectives covered. Pupils are expected to be confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in geography using subject specific vocabulary, and able to recall their learning over time.

Larch Class (Year 1 and 2) learnt an enormous amount about the seven continents through their topic ‘Our World’. They began by looking at the physical geography of the world and checking their understanding of some of the terminology they would come across, such as ‘land’ and ‘island’.

 

They moved on to learn about how the world’s seven continents and five oceans were created.

 

One child wrote: “The land was a whole land. It was moveing so slowly it broak into seven continents.”

 

Larch Class carried out lots of different activities to develop their understanding of how the land moved slowly apart. They used a map of the continents, almost like a jigsaw puzzle, to enact the continental drift.

 

Here you can see the children in Larch Class using play dough to show their knowledge of the shape, size and position of the seven continents.
