Art Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

 

At the Belfry we are passionate about providing children with a range of experiences and different art forms in order to inspire and enrich their continuous learning. The children explore and develop their skills and creativity using a wide range of media as part of art projects throughout the year. This runs in parallel to learning about colour mixing and fine mark making as part of observational drawing.

 

We value Art as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.

 

We intend for all of our pupils to:

- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

 

Implementation

In the Foundation Stage children explore art through a number of art topics throughout the year. Children are also encouraged to begin observational drawing. The children find out about and work with colour, texture, shape, space and form in two and three dimensions.

 

In Key Stage 1 projects are interspersed with increased focus on observational drawing and awareness of colour mixing. By running both aspects of art simultaneously, one aspect can enhance the other and the children can see the success of their work and how to improve. The projects completed in KS1 involve sculpture, colour and a mixture of different media.

 

In Key stage 2 the children are encouraged to sketch with greater detail. The observational drawing and colour mixing is more advanced than KS1 as the children are given more complex items to observe. The projects completed in KS2 include sculpture and use of nature in creating art.
