The Belfry CE VA Primary School

Expressive Arts

This area encourages children's creativity and self-expression through various mediums, such as art, music, drama, and dance.

At The Belfry, we want our children to sing songs, make music, dance and perform with confidence. To encourage and support this, we plan for regular music lessons  and teach various songs throughout the year, including traditional nursery rhymes, songs linked to our topics and celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. In our provision we have a stage with instruments to encourage group performances, a home corner and themed role-play areas, and we often perform our stories to each other that were written as part of story scribing sessions.

During the year, the children are introduced to different artists and their work and are taught specific techniques used by them to then create artwork of their own using different media such as paint, collage, natural materials and clay. Children have access to a range of craft resources within the classroom that they can use to freely explore their own ideas and are also taught how to safely use and explore a variety of tools such as scissors and hole punches. Staff encourage children to talk about their creations, identifying what they have made and how they achieved this.

We provide a range of large and small construction resources that children are able to use during their play to create models independently and with their friends, and various small world toys for them to develop imaginary scenarios.

Early Learning Goals
